Wooldridge Residence These images show the process of developing the massing of the roof and volumes below.

4/8/03 Initial partial study of roof forms. Based on ridgeline running the length of the house, with gable on right and hip on left. Secondary roofs to left join to hip in various valleys unresolved at this point.
4/9/03 Further resolution of hips at left side results in undesirable valley.
4/9/03 Attempt to resolve valley by simplifying roof forms not adequate. Valley remains.

4/9/03 Valley resolved by moving end of hip further to the left, joining with hip over Den, as in initial study.
4/10/03 Further development of roof forms, showing walls below, skylights at ridgeline. However, undesirable valley between entry gable and main roof now apparent.
4/10/03 Undesirable valley removed by moving entry gable to ridge. However, skylights become an issue, and entry still seems pushed into corner, and heirarchy of roof forms is somewhat confused (which is primary now?)

4/11/03 Centrality of entry form (and great room beyond is articulated by a central "tower" element. Surrounding roof pitches lowered to defer to new element, overhangs and massing modified somewhat to give a more "California" feeling.

4/12/03 A scheme in which the roof of the main volume is modified to bring the overall composition back into a cohesive whole, and the individual skylights are replaced by a continuous light monitor. The garage roof becomes a hip to bring down the scale from the street view.
4/12/03 The wall of the two side volumes is brought across the front to form the arcaded entry, with the actual doors and windows behind. Roofs of side elements are hipped back at the corner to reduce their mass and provide clearances for fenestration. An architectural vocabulary sympathetic with the massing is applied.

4/16/03 Scale of central volume is reduced, while amount of glass is increased. Main house is raised 18", garage is left at grade. Garage roof is lowered to reduce competition with central element. Note that elevation at lower garage/kitchen and stair to same is incomplete.

4/17/03 Garage roof is raised slightly, architectural treatment from earlier study applied, per Mike's preference. The somewhat taller garage is less "squashed", and the change removes the stylistic competition between the two large arches
